Density

Pour one-third cup of syrup into a glass jar followed by one-third cup of cooking oil. Then pour in one-third cup of water. Drop in a piece of plastic, followed by a grape, followed by a small cork. See what happens.

You will notice that the different liquids stacks up in layers. This is because the liquids have different densities. The most dense (syrup) will be at the bottom, the least dense (oil) will be at the top, with the water in between. Each object will sink to the level of the liquid that has a greater density than the object. The object will then float on that layer.

Science Experiments

Density is defined as the ratio of the mass of an object to its volume

Graham Crackers

We used the recipe from Baking Bites for homemade graham crackers.
Aiden got to practice using the rolling pin for the first time.

Sink or Float?

First, we collected many objects from around the house and outside.
Second, we predicted which ones would float and which ones would sink.
Third, we tested them out!

Banana Bread

Aiden and I baked banana bread today. We worked on counting and pouring. And I let him put everything except the eggs in. I keep telling him he cant touch the raw eggs yet, and he keeps asking why he cant help with the rotten eggs.

Fun and yummy. We used a recipe from Martha Stewart

All About Frogs

Aiden has been way into frogs. So we stocked up on frog books at the library and today our craft was:
The Letter "F", they colored and decorated with stickers and we talked about how frog starts with f
Frog Grocery Bag Puppets
We painted a grocery bag green
glued eyeballs and a tongue on

Rainbows

I thought this would be good practice for gluing as well as matching colors. I also thought they would really enjoying being set free with the glue bottles, but as usual I was wrong. They did half the gluing and I helped them finish up. At three years old they are both very good at their colors. They do seem to enjoy anything that is like a game though. This idea came from: Let's Explore!

  • Rainbow outline with colors
  • bits of colored paper
  • glue

Shapes, Cake, and Shadow Box

Shapes Activity I used the idea from: www.notimeforflashcards.com

It worked really well. I did some different shapes, and lots of little ones to match. It is important to do different colors of the large shape so they really have to think about the shape and not just the color. Then you can mix them up and work on color matching too.

Cake, the recipe comes from: www.se7en.org.za
I am getting more brave about letting Aiden "help" in the kitchen. I guess since I am not terribly inept at baking/cooking myself I tend to be a little controlling. But today he poured in all the dry ingredients and unwrapped the butter.

Shadow Box:
  • shoe box
  • tempera paint
  • paint brush
  • colored paper
  • glue
  • apron - made from an old receiving blanket
Aiden wanted to make a zoo, so he painted the inside green
I drew the animals and he colored them
I cute the animals out
Then for a little extra education we made corresponding first letters and matched them up a couple of times before glueing them in the box.
